Traveling with others is a lot of fun, there is not doubt about that. However, there are some parts of traveling with others that can be some drawbacks (if you see them that way). Here are some things I can add to the conversation that I have encountered while traveling with others.
Schedules collide – When you travel, I am sure you will have your set agenda of things or places you want to see. However, when you are traveling with a group, your plans may collide with others. You may want to go to the temples or shrines in Japan while others may want to go see something else. This is something you will have to keep in mind when you are planning to travel with others. Compromises will have to be made.
Food differences – This is a real one. I like certain foods and hate others. This is going to ring true with others when you are traveling, so this is something you have to keep in mind when you are looking for places to eat or searching for a spot during the day. For example, I hate sushi, but when traveling in Japan, you may have others that love it, so you will either have to find a spot that serves both, or just find a way to make sure both parties are able to be happy and find enough food.
Sharing a room – This is a reality, especially in small rooms like you will find in Japan. There is not a lot of room to spread out and you have to be respectful of the other person, so walking around in your underwear is not advised. And if they snore or talk in their sleep, get ready for that as well. These are all really minor things, but it is really easy to forget about and then once you travel, it becomes a harsh reality, real fast. Pack smart and just know who you may be rooming with.
Compromise – Remember how I mentioned how schedules can collide, this means you will have to compromise when planning a trip. You will probably have to book or go to places you don’t want to or could care less about. When traveling solo, you don’t have to deal with it, but with others, it is something you will have to deal with. Compromise is very important because the others you are with may not want to do the things you want to do, so never forget that.
Getting tired – This is a little one but a real one. If you are a night owl or someone that likes to turn in early, just be aware if the people you are traveling with may have other plans. I like to stay up, but be back at my hotel with some cold beverages at a decent hour. If I traveled with others that wanted to go bar hopping late or somewhere else, I would have my problems with that and that would not make it a lot of fun for that part of the trip. Again, this is something to think about while planning with others.
