The famous Osaka Kaiyukan Aquarium is one of the best aquariums in the world and is a must see when you visit Japan and the city of Osaka. There is not other aquarium that has both the size and variety of species that the Osaka Aquarium has.
Built in 1990, Kaiyukan Aquarium is among the best in the world and the largest in all of Japan. It is home to over 29,000 animals including 470 species ranging from the Whale Shark all the way to tiny jellyfish.
The Aquarium has over 15 large tanks and is over 8 stories tall. Visitors will start from the very top of the aquarium and walk their way down the levels, exploring different themes and environments. The aquarium is built around it’s largest tank that is home to the famous whale sharks and even includes manta rays and sharks, among other incredible creatures.
The aquarium itself is in the Tempozan Harbor Village area, which is a bit of a hike from the Namba area, so I would recommend taking a cab to get to the aquarium and save time between the subways and walking.
The Aquarium is open from 10 AM to 8 PM (this was prior to the Covid restrictions and may have changed so be sure to check before you go) and cost about 2400 Yen per person to enter (for adults).
I will have another blog down the line that will highlight some of my favorite creatures that call this massive place home. The amount of biodiversity that is housed here is simply incredible.
