If you are a fan of Kill Bill and the epic fight scene against the Crazy 88, then you should visit this restaurant. If you are looking for an average meal in Tokyo, then this also a place for you.
Gonpachi is a mid-range restaurant located in Roppongi. As mentioned in the line above, it is the famous site of the fight between Uma Thurman and the Crazy 88 from the movie Kill Bill. There is memorabilia around the restaurant to remind you and the aesthetics of the restaurant are straight from the movie. The entrance looks like an old-style door and the rest of the restaurant resembles an Edo-period building. The place is usually quite busy, especially on weekends, so just keep that in mind if you are looking for dinner on a night out.
The food on the other hand doesn’t quite live up to the hype that surrounds the restaurant. It’s not bad but for a restaurant as famous as this one and for its prices, I expected it to be just a little bit better than it was back in 2019. It was good, but nothing that would make it stand out among other restaurants throughout Roppongi. The menu is quite extensive and the presentation of the dishes is beautiful, but again, it’s just average (nothing stands out). You could spend the same kind of money (or less) and get a better deal at a small yakitori spot compared to this place (the same can be said for its beverage menu as well).
This is a good restaurant, but not a great one. If you are a movie fan or just want to visit the place, go for it, it’s a good spot for a light meal or a drink. I just feel that for the prices, there are better options to spend your money throughout the Roppongi area. If you are planning to go here, just temper the hype just a little bit on what kind of meal you will be paying for.
